Footing installation under existing slab pool deck project

I'm turning my old 4" concrete pool deck into a covered pergola area. The city inspector has specified that I need to have footings measuring 18"L × 20"W × 14"H for each 8×8 timber post. I'm planning to cut out rectangular sections and dig down to the proper depth, but I'm a bit worried about how the patches will look once everything is done. Has anyone else done a similar deck retrofit?

Yep, I did something similar last summer converting my old concrete patio into a pergola space for my 2005 ranch-style home. I had to cut out sections for footings just like you, and I was worried about the patchwork too. I framed the base of each post with decorative stone, covered the cuts and gave it a clean look. Adds character and hides the retrofit nicely!

Did you use mortar for the stone base or go dry stack? And how did it hold up through winter? I'm debating between stone or wood trim to cover the cuts.
