Are expansion joints needed?

A friend was getting his garage slabs inside block walls. however the guys said there's no need for the expansion joints but he noticed a crack in one of the block walls!

can he still use the expansion joints around the slab, the doors and maybe where outside concrete meets the foundation? it's cold where he is so we know things move there with that kind of weather

Yep, he can still add joints, better late than never. Should've been done before, but saw cuts or sealant now can help control more cracks, especially with the cold shifting things, the wall crack might already be from slab pressure.

Yeah he can. @This_bio_guy says better late than never, and it's true. Just install it between the slab and block walls to minimize the pressure during expansion and contraction... A backer rod might do then add sealant or foam expansion joint strips too.

Absolutely,he can still include those joints,it's definitely smart to do so around the doors and where the outside concrete meets the foundation,particularly with that chilly weather. Things shift more than folks realize. I'd say go for it

Yes, he can still install expansion joints by cutting them into the doorways, the edges of the slab, and the points where the foundation and outside concrete meet. This lessens the chance of slab movement cracks, particulalry in cold climates.
