Building a patio

I have this project of building a big patio and i have a few questions. the patio is going to touch my house and two concrete walls while the other side is open. Thinking of using a rebar to make sure that it doesn't move.

With that said, are the expansion joint stuff necessary between the patio and walls? also, how far apart should I cut the lines in the concrete so it does not crack?

I'd rather not tie into the house, just no. For the cutting, dont forget the standard practice should be 3x the thickness in feet and always use expansion joint between 2 stationary points. Good luck.

Expansion and control joints are crucial if you want to avoid cracking. The expansion should be installed between the patio and house foundation and between the patio and the two concrete walls.

A rebar's a definitely great idea for extra strength!

for those cut lines to prevent random cracks, space them out around every 8-12 feet in a grid pattern. Cut them soon after pouring.

Great project! Make sure to leave a gap, or expansion joint, between the patio and the house or walls. This helps prevent any stress issues. I usually go with 1/2 inch foam or fiberboard for that. For control joints, I cut them every 8 to 10 feet and make them about a quarter of the slab's depth. This really helps control cracking
