at timses when pouring, the mixer driver will add a bit of water to make the concrete easier to float. thought about plasticizers, but they can get real costly. For stamped concrete, i keep it stiff around a 4 slump and use a retarder. For bigger pours, i throw in a fritz pack retarder partway through. We all know adding water weakens the concrete, so the question is, do you guys ever order a stronger mix if you know youre going to be adding water to make it more workable?

Agree with @concreteer1 as this can offset the dilution due to the added water. But do use plasticizer yes for added workability as well. Just a little bit can go a looong way for this one.

hey, that's actually a smart move, and I've done it more than once. lol if I know the driver or crew's gonna end up adding water to ease the finish, I'll bump the mix strength up, order 4000 psi if I need 3500, just to hedge the gamble.

One thing I'd like to point out is to make sure you don't get a too strong mix. That way you'll need to add more water and at the end of the day you'll be left with too much cement you won't be able to use. It's a thin line so you'll have to eyeball it

yeah, I did that,if I knew we would be using water to achieve workabiltiy, I increased the mix strength a little. safer play, particulalry on larger pours

well, yeah. a stronger mix will do it. it will make the bonds stronger
